  • olympian de-olympianized; olympics out of control
ahhh, so this chick, voula papachristou, has been expelled from the olympics for saying that, "with so many africans in greece... at least the west nile mosquitoes will eat home made food."

Papachristou, who has 1,319 followers at the time of writing, posted tweets which mocked African immigrants and claimed support for a far-right political party, according to the Associated Press.

"With so many Africans in Greece... At least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food," she tweeted.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee, which oversees the Greek Olympic team, announced Wednesday that the 23-year-old is out of the team due to “statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement." Papachristou had yet to travel from Athens to London for the Games. The women’s triple jump event starts on Aug. 3.

On Wednesday morning, Papachristou, ranked 17th in the world in her discipline, apologized. She wrote:

“I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.

My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races.”

Papachristou, listed under the name Paraskevi Papahristou on the Olympics website, went on to apologize to her friends, fellow athletes, coach, and family, along with those who support her career. She finished in 11th place at the 2011 European Championships and won gold at the Under-23 European Championships in 2009 and 2011.

Last month, the International Olympic Committee issued social media guidelines to all athletes, governing what they are and are not allowed to share on Twitter, Facebook, et al.

Other Olympic athletes have been censured by their national governing bodies for sharing too much. A pair of Australian swimmers were told to stay off Twitter and Facebook after posting a photo of themselves holding guns during a training camp, and they’ll be sent home from the Games once their events are complete.

well, if this triple jumping doesn't work out for her... there's always po[Image: voula-papachristou-greece.jpg].jpg[/img]

i don't consider that to be racist and for the olympic committee to ban her for saying that just goes to show how fuck-tarded the olympics are in general.

to back up my claim that the olympics are fuck-tarded, here is another story regarding how the olympics can strip a person of the civil rights:

Nick D’Arcy and Kenrick Monk must be feeling under the gun right now.

he Australian swimmers found themselves stranded in the deep end when a photo of them holding firearms spread in Olympic-qualifying time on Twitter and Facebook.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has now handed down punishments to the pair: They’re banned from Facebook, Twitter and blogging, and both will be sent home from the Olympic Games once their swimming events are over. The 24-year-olds will not be allowed to use social media sites from mid-July to mid-August.

"Australian Olympians are required to meet very high standards of conduct and we cannot risk the reputation of the team," Australia’s Olympic Chef de Mission Nick Green said.

The AOC ‘s punishment is separate from an investigation being carried out by Swimming Australia, which is meeting with the swimmers next Monday.

D’Arcy and Monk were last week pictured holding pistols and shotguns at a gun shop in the Los Angeles area. Australia’s Olympic swimming team is training in the U.S. ahead of the games.

We have a feeling the only gun they’ll be close to in future is the starter’s pistol.

so, with these australian guys... posing with guns in a gun store... what is so wrong with that? they use guns in the olympics...

"Yeah. I understand the mechanics of it, shithead. I just don't understand how this is any less retarded than what I'm suggesting." - Kiley; Housebound.
Why would Australian swimmers be seen with guns, do they swim with them, no, its a publicity stunt. Voula Papachristou made an outright racist remark. The Olympics is probably the only time most of the world come together, why spoil it with crass behaviour and remarks ?
Papachristou is a moron and her apology is bullshit, but she shouldn't have been expelled. As heartless and stupid as her remark was, she had the right to say and share it with like-minded retards. To penalise her for expressing herself should surely be "contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement." The Australian incident is just ridiculous. They did nothing wrong. They broke no laws and unlike Papachristou didn't even make any offensive remarks. Why does modern media have so little respect for us that it thinks we're constantly a hair's breadth away from shitting ourselves and crying about someone else's opinions or lifestyle?
a better question would be, 'what do swimmers with guns have to do with the olympics?'

if you came up with, 'nothing.' you are correct. the two have nothing to do with one another yet, the olympics has decided that it was still inappropriate enough to send the swimmer's home after they compete - not before they compete - after.

as far as papachristou, i still see nothing racist about her comment. perhaps she was just trying to comment on the spreading mosquito epidemic and the comment came out retarded and nonsensical. if comment's like those are to be taken as racist... what's next? perhaps in the near future even mentioning that 'west nile mosquitoes' are even from africa will result in potential censorship?

the olympics brings people coming together? woah now... seems to me that the only thing the olympics does is endorse conflict and competition... and endorses the limitations of personal freedoms and censorship... and as always... money.

even in the early days of the olympics... 2500+ years ago... the games were centered on politics and control.
