what browser is it and can't you just modify the skin/system colors?

Type it in word in the colour of your choise and cut and paste.

It's firefox. It's a custom theme. The grey type is across the board. Not just in the browser bar. It's in notepad, etc. I'm trying to modify it, firstly, so i can see myself what the fuck i'm typing.
And secondly, to insert it in a Win7 install ISO as part of the package to give users the option to personalise their install.
But first and foremost i'd like to be able to see what the fuck i'm typing 
in that case (as i'm no longer a windows user), my first guess would be that the system color scheme you have chosen is at fault. i can't remember what it is called exactly, but it was something like 'window color' or something.
