I recently have found a bunch of good videos (mostly cartoons) on Youtube that I would love to be able to download and store them on my hardrive in the form of video files.
As I understand, when you are watching a video over Youtube, it is called a "streaming video" or "live streaming video" and it doesn't seem easy to download it in the form of a file instead of just watching it play and then when it's finished playing, it is not accessible any longer - except to play it again.
My guess is that Youtube and others would want to make it very difficult for anyone to play one of their videos and then convert it to a file and save it. The reason is that if people could do that, they wouldn't really need Youtube any more.
Is this correct? I'm just guessing. Are there any tools or techniques that enable people to "capture" these streaming videos while they play and convert them to files?
Please correct my use of the language if it is incorrect. I would really llike to know the correct terms to use so that I can talk or write about this stuff without sounding as if I don't know what I'm talking about.
Thank you.
