A man killed by a 1,200 pound polar bear when he climbed into the animal's Central Park Zoo cage on Sunday was identified yesterday as Conrado Mones, a 29-year-old immigrant from Cuba.

A friend identified the victim, who was killed after he scaled three fences to enter the bear's pen. Mr. Mones had been escorted from the zoo several times Saturday and Sunday following repeated attempts to climb into the cages of other animals.

Parks Commissioner Gordon Davis said that nothing would be done with the bear, which had been found ''toying'' with Mr. Mones's body, ''flipping it into the water, out of the water,'' according to a police spokesman.

''It would be natural,'' Mr. Davis said, for the bear ''to attack an intruder.''

so... i was doing some research on bear attacks when i came across this story, but i can't find the original article that indicated that the man had been harassing the polar bear for three days... mainly calling the bear names, arguing with the bear and taunting the bear...

either way, i couldn't help but laugh.
