The Force will be with us: Death Star plans rejected by White House

The White House has shot down a petition to build a Death Star because it does not support the destruction of other planets and the costs involved would be too high.

The petition, created last November, asked the White House to begin construction on a Death Star by 2016

    12th January 2013

The decision has disappointed Star Wars fans, who had submitted the proposal on the White House website where it attracted 34,000 signatures, meaning it qualified for an official response.

The petition had proposed that the US build a moon-sized military battle station armed with a planet destroying super-laser modelled on the Death Star seen in the popular science fiction films.

A formal response to the online petition said building the fictional battle-station would cost too much, adding that "the administration does not support blowing up planets."

In a lengthy tongue-in-cheek statement on the White House website, a senior official said: "The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it."

The petition, created last November, asked the White House to begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.

Shaping their proposal to America's straightened economic times, the petitioners emphasised the project had great job-creation potential.

"By focusing our defence resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defence," they argued.

It gained 34,435 signatures – almost 10,000 more than the threshold which obliges the White House to provide a formal response under its rules.

Paul Shawcross, head of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, responded with a document "This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For" in a tongue in cheek nod to a famous quote from the original Star Wars film.

He said the US government shared the desire of the signatories for "job creation and a strong national defence", but added: "A Death Star isn't on the horizon."

He noted that an estimated construction cost of $850 quadrillion would be a problem at a time when the administration is trying to rein in spending.

Technically a Death Star has "a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship", he also observed.

The administration was also keen to emphasis its belief in galactic peace, saying that it does not support the blowing up of other planets.

Mr Shawcross said the US did have "floating robot assistants" on the International Space Station and in Barack Obama, "a President who knows his way around a light sabre and advanced (marshmallow) cannon".

Mr Shawcross concluded by urging students to pursue careers in science-related fields.

"If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us!" he wrote.

"Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

as if... the so called 'students' that shawcross is addressing are in fact 55 year old basement-dwelling virgins that decided to take a break from their faggot role playing games just to sign that petition.
