Are the positions in brackets for the letters in the scrambled word, or for when it's been unscrambled? I see an 8 letter word but no 10.

The positions refer to the letters in the unscrambled word of course.

Eg.,

If the scrambled word and positions are given as follows:
A D I X R O O B (pos: 1 , 3, 6)

The unscrambled word would be RADIOBOX.
The letters in positions 1, 3 and 6 would be 'R', 'D' and 'B'. You note down these letters separately.

When you have unscrambled all 4 words, given in puzzle above, you should have a total of 10 letters (using the position indicators).
These, you unscramble again to get the final 10 letter word.
