Looking at the Pier

Fidgety shadows of lights
make the sea look like a Van Gogh painting.

I want to go swimming
as if I could live in one man's distillation of night.

What does 'one man's distillation of night' mean, Jack?

The "one man" is Van Gogh, and his "distillation of night" refers to the image of night in this painting, "Starry Night Over the Rhone":

As it's a painting the image doesn't move, so it's a distillation.
