Home Bible Studies Require Permit in OC, CA
#1
Orange County, CA

The county has deemed that citizens wishing to have Bible study meetings in their home must get a permit from the city. Opponents call the sanctions unconstitutional.

i defend that each and every person should be free to do whatever they please as long as they do not cause harm to a third party.

The sadistic side of me revels in Christians being denied their rights, just as they've striven to deny their fellows' rights for generations, but the rational side of me accepts this is wrong and that people have the right to believe what they wish and discuss their beliefs among themselves.

True enough, if anyone deserves to have their freedoms restricted it is those who have thought to seek the freedoms of others . . . but no one deserves that- not even the right-wing igmos. If I want to have a fucking Star Trek convention in my home I should be able to do that as long as I am not disturbing the peace. Angry

I am obviously not a big Bible study fan personally. I have been forced to go to too many of them in my life as a pastor's son. Every now and then there was a cute daughter involved, but mostly it was just boring as Hell. Even though I don't cherish my right to study the Word, I still feel the same sense of righteous indignation that I feel when someone tells me a insert race here is insert stereotype here!!! Wink

Seriously though, let them fucking Bible study. What's the harm?

Then again, maybe it's not such a bad thing... presumably they'd need to register themselves as a bible study group in order to get a permit... and then they're easier to hunt down...

There's too much bureaucracy all over the place these days, but very little of it can actually be enforced. The penalty for having an unlicenced bible study meeting is what? A very severe talking-to? I'm sure the Powers justify it by saying it's a town planning issue, as regular meetings in residential areas create traffic and parking problems in the same way that the poor Avon and Tupperware ladies are supposed to pay to register as "home businesses".

Having said that, it's absolutely NOT socialist, it's fascist or authoritarian as sj says. I've noticed Americans sometimes use "socialist" as representing all the evils of the world, like when they're too miserable to introduce proper health care.
No fucking censorship. Ever.

Well, there's that copyright problem... but you're right, you wouldn't be disturbing the peace.
