A Time to Kill (1996)

Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock, Kevin Spacey, Donald and Keifer Sutherland, Ashley Judd...how did it take me so long to see this movie?

I have been in a real start-a-movie-and-pass-out phase lately, but this movie kept me interested throughout and wide awake and thinking as the credits rolled. There was something so earnest about Samuel L. Jackson's portrayal of Carl Lee, a man on trial for the revenge-murder of two men who raped and beat his ten-year-old daughter. I kept me putting myself in his shoes, which is exactly what a good drama should make the viewer do.

Ashley Judd is one of my favorite actresses, but the real magic happens when Bullock and McConaughey are onscreen together. Their chemistry is electric and kept me interested in the development of their interactions. Without spoiling, I will say that the writers of this movie have woven a thread of purity into every move the lead ensemble make. It enhances the natural instinct to support the lead players if he/she are worthy.

In the end, the viewer feels relieved, provoked, and saddened all at once.

It wasn't all perfect, of course. Some of McConaughey's scenes felt a little forced, especially the finale courtroom tear-jerker. The entire plot has been done again and again, so the story has to do all of the work. It can be hokey at times and this movie is certainly very predictable, but for me it works well for a first time viewing and will be a candidate for reviewing.

Captain Fantastic (2016) - 7.9
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3553976/
In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent.

A beautiful movie. I still wonder what the last scene means.

Also wasted time on Ghostbusters (2016), Suicide Squad (2016).

I saw this movie in theaters, but recently watched it again at home. It's hilarious although at times the humor is a little absurd, which I enjoy, but some don't. All in all a great movie.

I watched Lucy recently and really enjoyed it. Loved the cinematography and storytelling. Concept was very simple actually, essentially like Limitless but with Scar Jo.

I finally got around to watching Terrence Malik's Badlands (1973) after years of putting it off.

Centered around the young girl Holly's thoughts about the young man who had seduced her and who later brings her so much trouble. It rambles on a bit, and does a little bit of scenario repetition, but for the most part does a good job of grabbing the attention.

7.5/10

Here're a few I watched and can recommend.

A few movies of French actress Jeanne Moreau.

Approaching the Unknown (2016)

R | 1h 30min | Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

I think there were only 3 characters in the movie.
Mark Strong plays the main role.

It is one of those 'going to Mars' / space movies, but it is certainly not an action film. No thrills.
This could be the reason for its low IMDb rating of 4.8/10

I liked it.
I'd recommend this movie for a quiet late night viewing.
Great for musing and introspection. Philosophical.
It is bordering on 'boring', but I never felt it so.
Mark's musings as he makes his nearly 300 day journey to Mars and the little events during his voyage, retains the audience attention.

The story is about Mark Strong, who manages to invent a way to make water from 'dust'.
Using this, he decides to take a one-way trip to Mars.

Monster Hunt(2015) [Chinese]

Here's the plot from IMDb. You decide if you want to watch it :-p

In an ancient world where monsters rule the land while humans keep to their own kingdom, a baby monster, Wuba, is born to a human father and monster queen. When mortals and creatures alike set out to capture the newborn, Wuba's adventure begins. The cute baby monster Huba is the child of a human man and a monster queen, threatened by both monster-hating humans and monsters attempting to capture the new-born in an ancient world based on medieval China.

I watched the English dubbed version and liked all aspects of the movie.
Very enjoyable.

The female lead Baihe Bai was fun to watch.

Pretty good action sequences.

PG | 1h 34min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Voices of Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin.

Nice feel good movie. The alien English used by Parsons is quite catchy.

Courage fuyons (1979) [French]

Stars : Jean Rochefort, Catherine Deneuve

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079003/

Not sure if there was a plot, but wondered if our 'Sri' resembled Rochefort in his younger days !
